Firearm Related Offenses & Investigating Shootings

Date:  June 30th, 2026 from 8am to 4:30pm

Location:  LA HIDTA

5801 E. Slauson Ave. Commerce, CA 90040

Every decision at your crime scene will be scrutinized long after the tape comes down.   Small mistakes in evidence collection, articulation, or charge selection can prevent cases from being filed or successfully prosecuted.

The Major Case Training Group difference:  This course prepares officers to get it right starting with the initial emergency response.  By combining the real-world experience of a veteran homicide detective with the legal expertise of a seasoned prosecutor, you'll learn how to properly process shooting scenes, apply California firearm laws, and build cases that are complete, thorough and filing-ready.

Course outline:

Forensics & Crime Scene Processing:   Learn where shooting scenes commonly break down, from missed evidence to weak documentation, and how those gaps are later challenged in court.  This block gives you the framework to properly process a shooting scene and to leverage forensic science to ensure your case starts off strong.

Firearm Law & Charge Selection: Understand how prosecutors evaluate shooting cases and why incorrect or incomplete charges lead to cases being rejected or reduced.  You'll learn how to apply the right Penal Code sections and enhancements from the start to ensure accountability for the offender holds up in court.

Avoiding Stalled Cases: Our instructors pass on decades of high-stakes experience, providing students with best practices for solving complex firearm-related offenses. Gain a proven toolkit to manage the unique hurdles of shooting investigation so your case does not go cold.

Who should attend:  Patrol officers, supervisors, general area & domestic violence detectives, gang & homicide detectives, task force officers, and more.   Contact us at support@majorcasetraininggroup.com for specialized group rates.

California’s Electronic Communications Privacy Act imposes warrant requirements, probable cause standards, and particularity obligations that go significantly beyond federal Fourth Amendment doctrine — and most investigators learn its requirements the hard way through a suppression hearing. This course is taught by California’s leading subject matter experts on leveraging digital evidence in major cases: a prosecutor who is one of California’s foremost authorities on Cal ECPA law and a detective who has solved dozens of major cases using Cal ECPA warrants and presented those cases in court.

Together they teach the full scope of California digital evidence warrant authorship — social media, cloud storage, call detail records, cell phone content, and infotainment system data — from the specific statutory requirements that survive judicial scrutiny to the prosecutorial standards your application must meet before it ever reaches a judge.

Registration requires completion of a qualification form.  Seats are allocated to investigators whose current assignments involve digital evidence warrant authorship.  This is an advanced level warrant writing course.  This course is not designed for investigators who have not previously authored search warrants.

A single error in a search warrant or a lapse in planning can lead to suppressed evidence and serious safety risks for everyone involved. Major Case Training Group addresses these challenges by pairing you with a veteran prosecutor and homicide detective to ensure your warrants are legally bulletproof and your operations are tactically sound.

The morning session is a hands-on workshop led by a prosecutor that shows you how to author a California-compliant residential search warrant based on a mock case, ensuring your warrant  stands up in court. The afternoon focuses on operational planning and risk mitigation strategies with a seasoned homicide detective, focusing on safely executing warrants for the community and law enforcement while documenting evidence collection to ensure your evidence is admitted in court.

Violent Crimes Committed Against Peace Officers POST Approved

CA POST Approved Plan N/A:  #8049-30495-25

You made the arrest.  Here's why your case did not get filed.

You've been there.

A suspect fights back.  You make the arrest, write the report, forward the case and days later the case is rejected or reduced to nothing.  Nobody explained why.  The suspect walked away from what he did to you and your fellow officers.

It happens constantly.  Not because the assault didn't occur, but because the investigation didn't give the prosecution what they needed to file the case.

PC 69 assault on a peace officer.  PC 245(c) assault with a deadly weapon on a peace officer.  PC 664-187 attempted murder of a peace officer.  These are serious charges that carry serious consequences for violent offenders, but only when the investigation is built correctly from the moment you are dispatched to the call.

A homicide detective and CAPO prosecutor who has filed these exact cases will show you what filing-ready looks like from the first radio call to the final verdict.

TESTIMONIAL

"This is the best course I have attended.  Having the prosecutor explain exactly what they need from my investigation, and showing me what's been missing, was something I've never gotten anywhere else.  I left knowing what to do differently for my next shift."

-Attendee from April 2026

What You Will Learn

PC 69 & The Legal Framework

The specific elements, sentencing enhancements and documentation requirements that determine whether your case gets filed taught directly from a prosecutor who makes filing decisions.

The Penal Codes that Protect You

PC 69 -  Resisting an executive officer

PC 245(c) & (d) - Assault with a deadly weapon on a peace officer

PC 148.10 - Resisting a peace officer resulting in serious bodily injury or death

VC 2800.2 - Felony evading

PC 664-187 - Attempted murder of a peace officer

PC 187 - Murder of a peace officer

You will leave knowing which charge applies, which sentencing enhancements attach, and exactly what your report needs to include to make each one file.

Building the Filing-Ready Investigation

Scene documentation, witness management, use of force articulation, AB 392 and what the law requires of you.  Learn how your decisions are evaluated post-incident, and how to document your actions in a way that satisfies both legal mandates and prosecutorial requirements.

Mock Courtroom - You Have Already Been There

Most officers walk into a use of force hearing having never seen what a defense attorney actually does to your testimony.  This mock courtroom changes that.

In this mock courtroom, you will see how your decisions get attacked, where the gaps in articulation get exposed, and what the difference looks like between testimony that holds and testimony that collapses.

Prior attendees say this is the moment the entire course clicks.  Seeing the defense attack laid out in real time and watching the prosecution dismantle it with properly documented evidence and clean articulation transforms how you write your reports the very next shift.

You leave having already been there.  That is the difference.

Search & Seizure: Warrantless Entry, Report Writing & Suppression Hearings

Your articulation is either good enough to win a suppression hearing, or it isn't.  Find out before a judge does.

Warrantless entries, vehicle pat downs, open container violations.  These are the encounters you handle every shift.  What separates a good arrest from a suppressed one isn't always what you did.  It's what you wrote and how you articulate the facts on the witness stand.

A veteran homicide detective and one of California's most knowledgeable prosecutors on search and seizure law and suppression hearings will test your articulation in a classroom environment before the stakes are real.  You will leave knowing exactly where your report stands and exactly how to make them better.

What You Will Learn

Cover the three encounters that commonly generate a suppression motion in California courts.

Warrantless entry into homes:  Exigent circumstances, hot pursuit and more.  What each requires and how to articulate why the decision made to enter was lawful.

Vehicle cursory searches:  Learn about the justification needed to make a lawful pat down to survive a suppression hearing.  The specific language required from you and the articulation failures that will get your evidence thrown out.

Open container laws:  Learn about California open container laws, the documentation chain that keeps evidence admissible, and the exact line between a lawful stop and an unlawful search.

Afternoon Session - Put Your Work to the Test

Mock scenarios, report writing and mock suppression hearings:

Participate in a mock encounter and learn how to document objective facts in a police report that will withstand scrutiny in court.

Your report then goes directly into the hearing.   One of California's foremost search and seizure experts build's the People's case around what you wrote.  A defense challenge attacks it.  A ruling comes down on your ability to articulate the facts in real time.

Our attendees call this the moment that permanently changes how they write every report going forward.  You leave with results, not just a certificate.

Your Instructors

One of California's most knowledgeable subject matter experts on search and seizure law and suppression hearings.  Learn from an instructor that has argued and won suppression motions across Southern California and built a career on knowing what wins in court and what doesn't survive a defense motion.  They teach the law, run the mock hearing and deliver a real time verdict on your articulation skills.  There is no instructor in State of California more qualified to evaluate your reports that the one who has spent a career winning the hearings you are trying to survive.

The course is co-taught by an active homicide detective with prior experience working  in a street gang unit and time spent on a proactive  crime suppression team.
